Special Weather Statement issued May 17 at 7:49AM CDT by NWS Brownsville TX At 748 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms near Penitas, moving east at 45 mph. HAZARD...Nickel size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Edinburg, Mission, Pharr, Weslaco, San Juan, Alamo, Donna, Mercedes, Hidalgo, and Elsa. This includes the following highways... US Highway 83 between mile markers 844 and 850. Interstate Highway 69 C between mile markers 1 and 12. US Highway 281 between mile markers 784 and 794. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.

HAZARD...Golf ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Locations impacted include... Pharr, Harlingen, Weslaco, San Juan, Alamo, Donna, Raymondville, Elsa, Edcouch, and Santa Rosa. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Prepare immediately for large hail and deadly cloud to ground lightning. Seek shelter inside a well-built structure. Stay away from windows.
